Case Study: A Noticeable Improvement on ‘Maersk Bahamas’
Due to changing conditions, such as the current situation in the Suez area, commercial ships are under pressure to sail at higher speeds to meet delivery schedules and avoid congestion. However, this increase in speed often leads to intensified vibrations from the ship’s engines, posing challenges to both vessel stability and crew comfort. As ships push to maintain faster transit times, managing these vibrations becomes essential to ensure smooth and efficient operations.
Recently, the container ship Maersk Bahamas solved the vibration issues by installing a G&O compensator, and this addition has brought about a remarkable difference in the vessel’s performance. Sales Manager Per Villemoes and Chief Engineer Decebal Ionescu, who took part in the commissioning on board, reflect on the process, the improvements, and the positive impact this installation has had on the ship’s operations and crew.
A Tangible Transformation on Board
Both Per Villemoes and Decebal Ionescu agree that the difference is clear.
“The difference in the ship’s operation is not just visible in the data – it’s something you can physically feel,” Villemoes explains.
“From the bridge to the engine room, you feel the difference and how the vibrations disappear,” Decebal Ionescu, Chief Engineer, Maersk Bahamas.
Positive Impact on Crew Well-being
Beyond technical performance, the compensator installation has significantly improved the crew’s daily lives and routines. Chief Engineer Decebal Ionescu notes, “The crew’s well-being have improved. They’re happy to feel the difference in their daily work.”
They both recall the commissioning phase, during which changes in engine RPMs made the adjustments felt throughout the ship. Witnessing the crew’s reactions the first time the compensator was activated was a memorable experience. “Their expressions were priceless,” Villemoes adds, underscoring how meaningful the improvement was for those working aboard.
Strong Collaboration with the Crew
Chief Engineer Decebal Ionescu emphasizes the importance of strong collaboration during the installation process. “The collaboration with the crew has been very good,” Villemoes agrees. For G&O Compensators, quality work means more than meeting technical standards; it means attention to detail and delivering a product that performs well and looks professional. “We take pride in doing things properly and thoroughly,” he says, describing their careful approach to checking each component of the installation, preferring to double-check rather than risk an oversight.
Overcoming Challenges with Experience and Flexibility
G&O Compensators acknowledge that installations like these are rarely straightforward. However, each hurdle is approached with a solution-oriented mindset. “There’s always something,” Villemoes remarks, “but we’re solution-oriented and flexible. Years of experience, combined with a calm, steady approach, allow our staff, in this case, Michael Holm Larsen, our experienced Service Engineer, to find solutions regardless of the obstacles encountered along the way. For him, this installation was no different – it was another opportunity to showcase his commitment to problem-solving and high-quality delivery”.
The new compensator has not only enhanced the ship’s performance but has also contributed to a better working environment for the crew. “We’re proud of the work we deliver,” Villemoes finishes.
