Retrofit solutions

Excessive vibrations on board vessels are more than a nuisance – they can cause
structural damage, shorten equipment lifespan, increase maintenance costs, and reduce crew comfort. A retrofit with a G&O Vibration Compensator eliminates these issues at the source, enabling safe, efficient, and compliant operation – without the need to modify the vessel’s main engine.

A retrofit is often the most cost-effective and least disruptive way
to eliminate harmful vibrations on vessels already in operation.
With a tailored G&O Compensators solution, you gain:

  • Extended equipment lifespan: By reducing mechanical stress on piping, engines, and support structures, our compensators help prevent fatigue cracking, leaks, and premature component failures. The result is fewer repairs, fewer replacements, and longer service intervals.
  • Improved crew comfort and safety: Our solutions minimise
the transmission of noise and vibration to accommodation and working areas – aligning with ISO 6954 (2000). This leads to better living conditions, improved morale, and higher crew retention.
  • Reduced operational downtime: Vibration-induced fatigue is a leading cause of unplanned maintenance and costly dry docks. Retrofitting a compensator reduces the risk of unscheduled stoppages and improves overall vessel stability.
  • Unlocked RPM range and optimised efficiency: A vibration-free engine enables operation across the full RPM spectrum – even in critical ranges. This allows for fuel savings, lower emissions and
more flexible route planning. Retrofitting can be carried out during scheduled dry dock or from port to port operation, making it an efficient upgrade path with minimal disruption.

How a retrofit project works

We deliver retrofit solutions as turnkey projects, tailored to the vessel’s unique vibration profile.

Real-world results

Retrofit Case: Mærsk Bahamas

Onboard Maersk Bahamas, the installation of a G&O Compensator resulted in a tangible difference – not just in measurements, but in how the vessel felt. Vibrations dropped significantly, and the crew reported noticeably improved comfort and well-being. Chief Engineer Decebal Ionescu described it simply:

“From the bridge to the engine room, you feel the difference.”

In another case, vibration levels caused by 6th-order horizontal motion dropped by 89.08% – from over 7 mm/s RMS to below 1 mm/s – after the retrofit. As Service Manager Morten Kjæmpe explained:

“The ship became so calm that a 20 DKK coin could balance upright on its edge – and it stayed there.”

Retrofit case: MT Marilee

Originally built without a compensator, MT Marilee faced severe vibration challenges at low RPM, causing both structural issues and fuel inefficiency. Following the installation of a C-20H compensator, vibrations were eliminated across the full RPM range. The result:

  • 0.8 tonnes/day fuel savings
  • 5% propulsion efficiency improvement
  • Improved crew safety and comfort
  • Reduced long-term wear and maintenance

The success led to the retrofitting of multiple sister vessels across the fleet.
